Introducing Gael Garcia, AKA Vax'ildan

Myth: Critical Role
Past Life: Vax'ildan, or more often Vax, was one half of a set of half-elf twins born out of wedlock to Elaina of Byroden, and Syldor Vessar of Syngorn. Byroden was where they spent the earliest, and happiest parts of their childhoods, with Syldor having no interest in his bastard children until they were old enough to show promise and (in Vax's case especially) become a problem. At that point, they were taken to Syngorn for education and for training, which Vax haaaaated. Losing their mother to a dragon took the only other home they'd known away from them as well, and eventually they set off on their own, relying on Vax's quick fingers and connections with the underworld guilds, as well as Vex's skill with a bow.
Over the years, Vex and Vax, along with their chosen family of Vox Machina, would go on to save the world. A lot. Though he'd primarily spent his life as a rogue, Vax eventually felt a calling toward service to Sarenrae...but ultimately pledged himself to the Matron of Ravens for Vex's life. Serving as the Raven Queen's paladin took quite a lot of soul-searching and adjusting, but with the help of his friends, his sister, and Keyleth--the half-elven druid he fell in love with--Vax was managing. Unfortunately, he was killed in battle and brought back for a short time as a lich to finish what he started. He was able to see his purpose through and say goodbye to the family he literally, gladly, traded everything for before walking into death's shadow with open arms.

Personality: Gael is a classic case of the aggressively unambitious genius. He tested off the charts as a kid but never understood why he should care. School wasn't challenging enough to be interesting, and he spent most of his time fucking off to do other things--creative things, inventive things, things that sometimes got him into a lot of trouble. He's naturally curious and not particularly good at listening to authority (he'll follow the rules if the rules make sense, but he's not playing along just because someone thinks he should), but he's also been clever enough and lucky enough to never get caught doing anything that would lead to serious consequences. In fact, Gael has the devil's own luck. The weirdest shit happens around him: if an alien came to earth as a talking dog, Gael is the one it'd go to for directions. He's pretty much taken his bizarre luck into swing and focuses on living his life from one adventure to the next. He loves joking around and always has a bright grin for anyone willing to play along. Whether he'll end up inventing the next Facebook or live out his days doing skateboarding tricks for money is anyone's guess.
Background: Gael grew up in Austin, Texas with his well-meaning parents, brilliant older brother, and older sister. His mother was a librarian and his father was an English teacher, so the house was filled with books and stories. Gael soaked them in, but also used them as inspiration for his own endless adventures (probably to the dismay of his parents when some of those adventures got a little out of hand.) He was a natural C-student with IQ tests off the charts, but thankfully he had enough close friends at school that he actually bothered to do the exact minimum required to never fail. (Except for those few times when the teacher or subject inspired him--then, he was an easy A+.) His older brother was the only one who could sometimes convince him to take life seriously, and Gael paid Diego back with easy, endless affection and ongoing pranks. He thinks his brother is pretty much the shit, so when Tulane offered him a full ride, he figured maybe he'd stop traveling and chasing adventure and give college a try. If he hates it, he can always catch a boat somewhere interesting.
